Bureau of Formal Complaints

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might reasonably want to know about how this works, why it exists, and what actually happens after you file something.

Is this a real complaint form?

No. Nothing you file here goes to a business, a landlord, a government office, or any real authority. There's no case number that connects to anything, no department that reviews it, and no outcome beyond the certificate itself. If you have an actual grievance that needs a real resolution — a bad product, a billing dispute, a workplace issue — this site can't help with that, and it isn't trying to. It exists purely for the ceremony of being heard, not the follow-through.

What actually happens to my complaint after I file it?

Three things, in order. First, the text is sent to an automated moderation service that checks it for hate speech, threats, harassment, and similar content before anything is published — if it's flagged, it's rejected on the spot and never goes public. Second, if it passes, it's saved to a database and given a permanent, sequential complaint number. Third, it appears in the public feed on the homepage, where anyone can read it, and stays there indefinitely unless it's later removed through moderation.

Do I need an account to file a complaint?

No. There's no sign-up, no email required, no login. You type your complaint, choose a category, and submit it. That also means there's no way to edit or delete a complaint yourself after filing it — see the next question for what to do if you need one removed.

Can I get a complaint removed after I've filed it?

Yes. Since complaints are public and don't require an account, the way to request removal is by email — contact us with a link or description of the complaint and we'll review it. See our Terms & Disclaimer for the full removal process.

Why does the certificate look so official?

Because that's the entire joke. The stamp, the serial number, the formal language, the "no further action will be taken" line — all of it is designed to look exactly like something that came from a real bureaucratic process, specifically because nothing about the process is real. The gap between how official it looks and how little it actually does is the whole point of the site.

Is my complaint anonymous?

Yes, in the sense that we don't collect your name, email, or any identifying information to let you file one. That said, anything you type is public and permanent once submitted — so it's anonymous from us, but not private from anyone reading the feed. Don't include information that identifies you or anyone else if you'd rather it stay that way.

Who moderates the content?

Every submission passes through an automated filter before publishing, and beyond that, this is a one-person project — there's no company or support team behind it, just someone who built it, checks reported content periodically, and keeps it running. If you see something that shouldn't be there, the report button on each entry flags it for review.

Is this free?

Yes, completely. The site is supported by advertising rather than any fee, subscription, or paid tier. There's nothing to buy and nothing gated behind payment.

Can I use this for something other than complaints?

The categories (interpersonal, cosmic injustice, betrayal, weather-related, minor inconvenience) are built around everyday grievances, and that's what the site is designed for. Content that falls outside that spirit — spam, advertising, or anything that violates our terms — gets filtered out or removed.
